Dear Dementia,
Seeing as how today is the anniversary of my baptism, I guess today is a great day to talk about faith.
I am incredibly grateful you can’t touch one’s faith and their spiritual memory. Even after you have taken nearly everything from someone, they still have their relationship with God. It remains a mystery to many how this is possible, but I have witnessed it time and time again.
It is through our faith traditions that we find purpose. It is in our faith practices that we find the rituals that keep us going and predict what is coming next. It is our faith that we look at suffering and thus allowing us to live fully with you.
From the rosary bringing to life a woman who once self-isolated out of fear, to the Eucharist that brings a spark to someone’s eyes when they can’t verbally communicate with those before them.
Thank you for your inability to touch faith and our relationship with God. I pray more people start to recognize the importance of faith in old age and in memory loss.
Until tomorrow,
Kate
