St. Dymphna Dementia Ministry

St. Dymphna, Patron Saint of Dementia, Pray for Us.

Feast Day: May 15th

This Irish Saint lived during the 7th century and was canonized in 620. She is the patron of those suffering from nervous/mental illness, as well as dementia.

Those with dementia still deserve to practice their chosen faith. All to frequently it is cast aside and seen as too hard for them to follow or participate in. This is quite inaccurate. Even with dementia, a person seeks their faith.  Through this ministry, I offer training for places of worship and their ministers of the sick, homebound, and those living with dementia. I myself am a lay minister who goes into my community to serve, pray, and, if Catholic, distribute the Sacrament of the Eucharist. I assist families and those living in care communities in finding local faith leaders and spiritual directors available for visits.  Personally, I am a practicing Catholic and speak through that lens, but have connections to other faith communities in New York, NY, and Appleton, WI.

Defend the lowly and fatherless;
render justice to the afflicted and needy.
Rescue the lowly and poor;
deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

JOHN 10:14-15

Loving God, Healer and Comforter,

we pray for those who suffer from the anxiety, ambiguity and confusion of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Look with mercy upon their distress, confusion or isolation. Shelter them where dignity and peace abound. Grant them understanding helpers and the willingness to accept help. In the face of loss of memory and control, increase their confidence in your love and strengthen their care-givers. As the Good Shepherd, tend to the sick, rest the weary, pity the afflicted, soothe the suffering and bless the dying. We make this supplication through the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes, in the name of your Son, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.
